Networking is often praised as a game-changer for business and professional growth, but let’s be real—no one really talks about how difficult and exhausting it can be, especially if you’re not naturally outgoing. As an entrepreneur in the natural hair care industry, I personally struggle with networking and self-promotion. I’ve come to realize that networking isn’t just about handing out business cards or making small talk at events; it’s about building real relationships, stepping outside of your comfort zone, and putting yourself in spaces that could lead to opportunities you never imagined. But knowing this doesn’t make it any easier.
The Struggle is Real
For me, networking can feel intimidating, awkward, and sometimes even fake. Walking into a room full of strangers, knowing you must introduce yourself, talk about what you do, and leave a lasting impression? That can feel overwhelming. The fear of rejection, imposter syndrome, or simply not knowing what to say can hold you back from making the most of networking opportunities.
As the founder of Sires Crown Natural Hair Essentials, I’ve faced all these challenges. There have been times when I questioned whether I belonged in certain rooms or doubted whether my voice mattered. But what I’m learning is that the discomfort often comes from overthinking and expecting too much of myself. Networking isn’t about being the loudest person in the room—it’s about making genuine connections that align with your goals and values.
Overcoming Networking Challenges
At a recent event, I was talking with a group of entrepreneurs when one of them said something that really stuck with me: “If you don’t tell me what you do, how can I promote you?” That statement hit me hard. It didn’t make networking easier, but it reminded me why it’s necessary. If I want my business to grow, I must be willing to put myself out there.
So, I started researching ways to overcome my networking challenges and came across an article by Nikki Svec on Black Professionals Network (10/2021). She outlined seven common networking struggles and how to move past them:
- Being an Introvert – Learn how to use your strengths, like listening and forming deeper one-on-one connections.
- Talking to Strangers – Shift your mindset. Instead of seeing it as a chore, think of it as an opportunity to learn about others.
- Introducing Yourself into Cliques – Approach groups with confidence. A simple “Mind if I join you?” can open a conversation.
- Dealing with Small Talk – Instead of dreading it, use it to ease into deeper conversations.
- General Conversation Skills – Focus on listening and asking questions to keep the dialogue going.
- Exiting Gracefully – Know when to wrap up a conversation without making it awkward.
- Following Up – The real magic happens after the event. A simple follow-up can turn a quick chat into a meaningful connection.
Pushing Myself to Show Up
After reading the article, it became clear—I have some work to do. Networking is a skill that gets better with practice. It may never feel completely natural to me, but I’m committed to improving. The relationships I build today could lead to doors opening tomorrow, but I must be willing to step into the room first.
I created a natural hair care line that I believe in, use every day, and receive amazing feedback on, so why is it so hard to talk about it? That’s something I’m determined to work on. So, my next self-challenge is networking over the next few months I am going to commit to building my network. Check back in this summer to see how I am doing better yet you should join me!!
